End of Half Term

Well, we have flown through another 6 weeks of classes at school and we are all ready for another break. It doesn't matter which country you're in, the students always get excited about a break from school and they seam to expect that the lessons leading up to the break are going to be fun with no or little educational content. This week has been one of those weeks. To add a curve ball to the whole situation, we had a school fete on Thursday evening (a carnival style event to raise funds for the school) and today, Friday, we had a citizenship day. So some classes were cancelled and others had a totally different topic presented in the lesson. I kept on thinking, if we had less misbehaving students, this would be much more fun and enjoyable. For instance, I volunteered to have wet sponges thrown at me for the fete. The kids paid £1 for 5 throws or 50p for 2. We raised well over £70 on this event, which was great. We had some kids, however, who were throwing rubbish along with the sponges. That really put a sour note to the whole thing. I could have done without that. I also witnessed students raiding stalls for sweets and money. But on the good side, I think we were quite successful in our fundraising. The sun stayed out for the entire event and I think we had a good turn out.
Last Saturday I met up with a Canadian friend in London, Amy Peters. She is on a 3 week trip of Europe travelling with her brother who is voluenteering in the Netherlands. She arrived in the UK on a Friday, and I showed her around London on Saturday. The weather was not very hospitable, but we had fun anyway, seeing Big Ben, London Tower, London Bridge, Tower Bridge, Globe Theatre, etc. Along the way we came across a peace march calling attention to "Free Palastine".
I am now winding up my day here at school and will be turning my attention to my trip to Scotland next week. I haven't been able to plan much becuase I've been really busy, but I have the first two nights booked. I guess I'll have to hope there will be beds available last minute. Fingers Crossed!

Shalom
Kevin
