Re-introduction to Winnipeg

I have now been back in Canada for just over two weeks and I am getting back into the swing of things. I have been able to reconnect with several friends and family members (and see how much my niece and nephew have grown!) After spending a week at my parent's place (and my hometown) of Altona and buying my first car (yes, my first car), I moved to Winnipeg. I have generally been taking it easy, doing a bit of shopping and organising the replacements of my lost wallet. I even went to the beach on August long weekend with Matt and AJ (the first visitors I got while I was in England). It was great to re-connect and share more about our British experience. They were even understanding when I was driving down an empty residential street on the left side of the road. Oops!

One of the things I love about being back is that even though Winnipeg is quite big (800,000 people) I kept on meeting people I knew by chance - about 1 a day since I’ve moved here. On Thursday I was biking to various locations downtown, reacquainting myself with the city again. I stopped at a 7-11 for bit and when I stepped outside, enjoying a proper Slurped (first one in a year), I found my bike lock had been cut and my bike was gone. Someone nicked my bike the first time I took it out! So I have a little sour feeling about the city once again.

I hoped that by returning back soon after school was out at Alderman Blaxill that I would be in some position to apply for teaching jobs back home, but it is looking quite sparse. I have talked to one colleague of mine who was in England a little shorter than I was, and she said that it didn't even pay for her to end her year early. By the time she got home there were no jobs posted. At least she got an interview over the phone while she was in Europe. I am still hopeful there might be something appearing soon - a new position or a reposting of a previous offer. During this time I am still gearing up for substitute teaching, though.
I’ll keep you posted.
Kevin
