Teaching... In July!
Life is still busy (naturally) as a first year teacher in a foreign country. Despite my body clock saying “Hold on! You should be on holidays in July!” I am still at school, sweating away during this heat wave. I remember being in grade 8 and enduring the hot weather by sitting in a dark room with our heads down. At least thee we could wear shorts! Here, I (along with the rest of the men and boys) have to wear trousers and work while it is up to 31 ºC. I was very hot and bothered especially on Wednesday and Thursday. I had a really hard time keeping a positive attitude those days. A couple of days ago, some of the kids wanted to go “on strike” to protest the rule about wearing trousers in this heat. Today, most of the school was “on strike” to protest a member of staff leaving next year. I wonder what cause they’ll come up with next week.
After this week (3-9 July) we have only two more weeks of school left. Next week Friday we have class trips for those more deserving, while the less deserving (those who have got too many detentions and/or exclusions) will stay in school. I haven’t been told yet where I will be going to supervise… I really don’t want to be back with the naughty kids for a whole day. They just get upset that they don’t get a reward like the good kids and they act up. We will just have to see…
The final games for the World Cup is going to played this weekend, and England is not going to be in it. They got knocked out in penalty kicks by Portugal last weekend. I went for a bike ride after the game was over and I saw tons of police in the town centre. The fans coming out of the pubs were generally well behaved though some of them were very annoyed. There were few football related incidents across the country and England has actually proved it is not the hooligan country of Europe anymore. Germany lost to Italy in extra time, so they will play Portugal for third place. Italy and France are in for the cup. Though none of my supporting teams (England, Germany, Switzerland & Argentina) are in the final game, I’ll be watching anyway!
